The Space Race

Wow, the third season of "Space:1999" would have been really, really different....

Pod Stallions 34: Disappointing Merchandise

This month's topic is some of the  disappointing toy lines that have stemmed from our more beloved properties over the years.

It's totally done out of love (as we both freely admit we bought and still own a lot of this stuff) but we talk about toys for Men in Black, the Phantom, Star Trek 4 and 5, Space:1999, Superman the movie, Doctor Who and much, much more.

Dixie & Lipton Star Wars Collector's Kit

I will admit that I spent my pocket money on Star Wars Dixie cups more than once (I lived behind a grocery store as a kid) but I never saw this cool promo, I'd have been all over it.

Star Wars Toothbrushes by Oral B

This is a great catalog from 1983 which smartly has the good people of Oral B cross promoting with the Empire.

I vividly remember my dentist having a huge display of these toothbrushes and him not giving me one because I was 12 (which I begrudgingly understood).

More spacey Dental Hygiene after the jump!

Sales Leaders

They sold Pet Food  by day but at night, this sales team dealt in erotic adventure and it was always in stock!

Mego Batgirl

With the passing of Yvonne Craig, I thought I'd pay tribute with Mego. As a kid I truly wanted a Batgirl figure, my crush on Craig was the motivating factor but i had no idea of this at my young age. In the end, my fear of what my friends would think won out and I've always regretted that weakness. When I first began collecting, she was my #1 target and i don't care what my friends think about that.

JJ Armes meet Kojak

Both these guys were based on real people, Kojak was an amalgam of several people who worked on a real life case but Armes was a real life detective with prosthetic hands. I'm not sure about the van being real however, just in my dreams sadly...

1977 Ideal Evel Knievel Catalog

1977 looked like it would be another banner year for Ideal Toys with it's Evel Knievel toy line which set sales records the previous years.

Evel was even  playing himself in the movie "Viva Knievel" to be released that June but thanks to a very well publicized incident, it all came crumbling down that year.

More Daredevil stunt goodness.

Archie at Riverdale High

I would have gone nut for a Jughead as a kid, sadly I never crossed path with these great Marx Archie figures until I was a teenager. Having no Reggie in the line does seem to remove all conflict.

Bar Ware:1975

Cool bar ware hit it's peak in 1975, around the same time as "you keep the glass" drinks....

Adventure from Beyond the Stars

There aren't many better ways to spend an afternoon in 1980 than acting out a "Buck Rogers on Tatooine" storyline.

The turf is ours by right, because it's our turn

Roving packs of "Dad Gangs" plagued suburbia until the Reagan administration created "The Thermostat Act" in 1981.

Flash Gordon Winners Announced

Well, we got a lot of love for our Bif Bang Pow! Flash Gordon action figure spotlight contest last week and while I can't give everyone a set, my pal (and podcast partner) Jason kicked in a second set so we could have two winners!

And they are:

Andy Raab (who said Flash himself is his fave)
Chris Franklin (More of a Vultan guy)

Congrats to both of you and thanks to everybody who played!  For everybody else, you can buy this set at Entertainment Earth right now.

PodStallions Episode 33: Monty Python

This month J& B discuss one of the most prolific comedy influences of our young lifetimes, Monty Python's FLying Circus and it's many incarnations.

We talk about our first encounters growing up, our favourite skits, the term "Pythonesque", delve into the movies (especially Holy Grail) and some of more interesting experiences with Python fans we've known and discuss some of our favourite things that came out of it's influence.

Gi Joe: Action Pals for Adventure

My first action figure love was the GI Joe Adventure team, truly the gateway experience for a pretty happy childhood. No matter how many times I see the art on those wonderful painted boxes, I feel five years old. I seriously hope that never fades.

Here are some fun links to explore on the site:

The Empire Strikes the snooze button

Really digging the art on these.

I never personally had a Star Wars bed spread but I have a childhood  pillow case collection that is like a pop culture time capsule.

No Mr Bond, I expect you to get down tonight

This is the only remaining photo of MGM's planned Disco era James Bond film "Mirror Ball" which was halted days into production, sadly the world would never know the pleasure of Adrian Zmed's 007.

Spotlight: Flash Gordon Action Figures by Bif Bang Pow!

It's been a good summer for me and new toys, as two lines based on retro properties came out and tickled my fancy (better than last summer's zero).

This week's is a slightly bigger deal to me as it's based one of my absolute favourite movies of all time, 1980's cinematic adaptation of Flash Gordon.

Indepth photo review, a contest and some scant blathering after the jump.
